The Salt March

On 12 March 1930, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi left his Sabarmati ashram with 78 volunteers for a historic 388-kilometre march to the coast at Dandi.

This act of peaceful civil disobedience, which consisted of gathering sea salt in violation of the British monopoly, would become one of the most iconic moments in the struggle for Indian independence.

“In a just cause, no defeat is possible.”

The Salt March perfectly illustrates the philosophy of active non-violence (ahimsa) advocated by Gandhi: resisting injustice without ever resorting to violence.
