Shanti Orissa

26 March 2014

Louis Campana, an activist and filmmaker, met the activists of Jana Sahajya during the Janadesh march in 2007; he then visited the villages of the most disadvantaged families supported by Jana Sahajya, a local NGO, to understand what their current living conditions were. Moved by the hardships they were enduring, Louis Campana decided, along with other people who shared the same vision, to create the association Shanti Orissa, in order to raise funds enabling Jana Sahajya to help these families improve their living conditions.

The program ended in 2012, after numerous developments and a change of the NGO in charge of coordinating the project.

Objective

To assist the tribal villages of Orissa (a state in Northeast India) and Burkina Faso (Africa) toward their self-reliance, in line with the Gandhian vision!!

“Surakshya, the security of a roof and dignified work”

The Surakshya program, set up in Orissa, has focused its efforts on a group of 41 families living in Gohirapadar, due to their extreme poverty, to enable them to build their future village on a plot of land located 1 km away, in Sukunabhata.

The objective of this pilot program is the creation of a model ecological village, where villagers are self-sufficient in terms of healthy living conditions, food, livelihoods and access to their rights. This model village could be replicated in the future for the inhabitants of other surrounding villages.

Shanti Orissa Burkina is in charge of finding funding for this program.

The program is implemented by the organization “Jana Sahajya”, which has extensive experience mobilizing tribal communities to claim their rights to land, water and forest.

Jana Sahajya will be technically supported by the organization Gram Vikas, to ensure good quality construction and to strengthen its capacities to carry out similar programs in the future without outside support.

Due to malfunctions caused by local corruption issues, Jana Sahajya was replaced in the implementation of the project by SATHI, and this village will be the only one built, contrary to what had initially been planned.

This project could not have been carried out without the support and involvement of Sandrine Debruyne and Sudhansu Dao, whom we sincerely thank.
