Missions

Gandhi International has set itself 3 main missions

  1. To show the relevance of Gandhi's thought in the face of the immense challenges of our time. Starting from the Sanskrit word ahimsa --abstention from the desire to do violence to a living being-- Gandhi coined the word "non-violence" to convey both his spirituality and his methods of action. Gandhian intuitions and thought have an economic and social, ecological and political, philosophical and spiritual dimension, and aim at the same time for personal transformation and societal change. It is a free voice, outside systems and conventions. All forms of action are possible in direct connection with this innovative and liberating thought.
  2. To weave an international network of organizations acting through non-violence with a view to societal change. In particular through close ties with organizations such as the Latin American SERPAJ (Adolfo Pérez Esquivel), the Indian movement Ekta Parishad (with Rajagopal PV), the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement in Sri Lanka (with Ariyaratne) and the Shanti Sadana Ashram in Assam (India, with Sri Hembhai).
  3. To promote training in non-violence, and in particular the creation of Training Institutes (manual, intellectual, political, moral) within the framework of eco-hamlets with a Gandhian vocation.
